Easy Ways to Help an Important Mestre

Now’s the time to walk the walk, folks.

Here’s a message from Mestre Lua Rasta in regard to Mestre Bigodinho in Salvador.

He gives some easy suggestions that every group can take to help. If we all give, we can make a big difference!

Keep in mind that euros, dollars, and yen go far in Brazil.

Oi galera,

Mestre Bigodinho is recovering from a fracture in his leg and it is hard for him to get around, and consequently, work.

So, we are asking everyone to pitch in and help.

If everyone who understands the importance of Mestre could do a little, I believe that we can ease this difficult time for him.

The following actions would be a lot of help:

- A fund-raising event at your space (roda, workshop, film screening, party, feijoada) to support Mestre.
- Buy a Mestre Waldemar cd (a single one or an entire box!) from Teimosia who has proposed that the proceeds be donated to Mestre. Email requests to: cdmestrewaldemar (at) gmail (dot) com
- Buy the DVD "Tributo ao Mestre Bigodinho" from o Atelier de Mestre Lua Rasta. The proceeds from this will be donated to Mestre. E-mail requests to: atelierlua (at) hotmail (dot) com

Once again, we have reached a troubling situation in regard to capoeira mestres in Brazil. Through thousands of processes where rivers of money are spent on contracting professionals – that in many cases aren’t even capoeiristas – to “decide” the destiny of capoeira as a historic patrimony, our true patrimonies (the guardians of culture, as the intellectuals like to say) do not have support of the government in moments like this, that happen all the time.

It falls to us capoeiristas, the people who understand the path of a capoeira mestre , to resolve to, at the very least, lessen the suffering of someone who has dedicated his life to capoeira and who is now facing difficulties buying expensive prescription medicines, pay the bills and at the same time be cared for and fed with the dignity he serves.

For these and for others, we ask for your help. And don’t wait! É hora é hora.

June 12th-!3th, 2010.

It was the Youth in Action: Service through Movement Conference in NYC. A really beautiful event with workshops taught completely by volunteers from around the city, country and the world. It was a wonderful thing to have such a variety of workshops: african & african brazilian percussion, capoeira movement & music, yoga, health & nutrition, art & the environment. Young people of all ages were with us and the energy was vibrant. Family and friends were there to support and to learn. There were struggles and obstacles (as there are with all events) but in the end, we were so glad for the outcome and look forward to all the opportunities to bring more events like this to the young people in our worldwide capoeira community.

We want to give a huge thanks again to all of guest instructors:

Capoeira in Recife: the Tough Guys & the Troublemakers

We know much about the history of capoeira in Rio de Janeiro thanks to work of Jair Moura and Carlos Eugênio Líbano Soares. Likewise, we have a lot of information about its history in Bahia thanks to the research of Frede Abreu, Antonio Liberac Cardoso Simões Pires, and others. However, there is significantly less known capoeira's past in the city of Recife, the capital of the state of Pernambuco, despite being one of Brazil's largest metropolitan areas and a major port city.

Bernardo Alves, a researcher who wrote a book about capoeira in Pernambuco discussed his findings in an interview with the group CICA (Centro de Instrução de Capoeira Angola) that was published in their journal, Biriba, in April 2002.

In the interview, Alves touches on many different themes: the various identities of capoeiristas of early twentieth century Pernambuco, the consequences of the lack of organization, and the "ethics" of capoeira.

Here is an excerpt of their conversation:

CICA: The fact that the maltas came together to fight, this rivalry between them, shows us that there was not solidarity around this work, but only a shock. Do you think that this also determined the lack of development of capoeira in Pernambuco?

Alves: I don’t believe so. It was more like partisanism. So, there were those that supported the more famous groups of the 4th Infantry Battalion and the guys that supported the other one that was famous, the band of Pedro espanhol, the Espanha. There were the criminals doing security for the officials. They would go there cheering and the capoeiras in the front were doing security work. In truth, they weren’t interested in doing security. They wanted to play. If you took out the capoeiras who were supporting this group, the others would come in and make trouble, breaking it up with clubs. But I will answer your question. So, there was this partisanism. In Bahia, capoeira was preserved because the Bahian preserved capoeira in the academies. If the academies had not been created, the same thing would have happened there that happened here [in Recife]. Those from here were expelled and those from there stayed around. A large majority of capoeiras from Bahia stayed there. So, they transformed this thing into a dance, or something; they disguised it; there was this disguise that did not happen here. I believe that they stopped passing capoeira from generation to generation and it ended. There wasn’t this passing down between generations, and there in Bahia this happened because of the existence of academies… you always have those guys that say no, this is a thing of the people, it has to be spontaneous, it can’t happen in the academies. But if there had not been academies, it would have disappeared in Bahia as well.

CICA: Did you not find any references to organized groups? Be it on the stage or in fights?

Alves: It was a neighborhood thing. The capoeira from Madalena didn’t enter in Coellos. He wouldn’t go under any circumstances. They are tribes. This is a very primitive thing.

CICA: Without a system nor an academy, capoeira here was more about malandragem… So, in the past the only people who practiced capoeira were the tough guys and bullies?

Alves: Yes. Remember that there were these two currents of capoeira in Pernambuco. That this here was the tough guy, and this here was the troublemaker. The tough guy was the guy who was more ethical, had more scruples. And the troublemaker was the guy who wanted to create trouble. He arrived and started fighting. But the tough guy, no. The tough guy was more dangerous than the other. It wasn’t a technical dispute. It was a fight to really knock the other out. Nascimento Grande was a very interesting guy. Mestre Deraldo Ferreira is Founder and Artistic Director of The Brazilian Cultural Center of New England, one of three Brazilian Cultural Points in the US, designated by then Brazilian Minister of Culture, Gilberto Gil. A Mestre (official master) of Capoeira Angola, Mestre Deraldo brings a 35-year tenure in Capoeira, Samba drumming and dancing, musical composition and choreography. Mestre Deraldo began studying Capoeira at the age of 14. He founded the Academy of Capoeira in his hometown of Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and he became a certified Mestre of Capoeira in 1984. Deraldo studied Capoeira Angola with Grand Mestre João Pequeno de Pastinha, student of Grand Mestre Pastinha, the "father and protector of capoeira" from an early age in Brazil. Grand Mestre João Pequeno graduated Deraldo as a master of Capoeira Angola in 2004. In the 1990’s he founded the Brazilian music and dance ensemble Samba Tremeterra. Mestre Deraldo is a featured music and dance soloist with Osvaldo Golijov’s 'La Pasión Segun San Marcos' in running performances worldwide. He was one of the first to bring Capoeira and Brazilian samba to North America. Over the past 25 years, Mestre Deraldo has taught regular classes at Amherst College, Hampshire College, MIT, Smith College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, numerous dance and music studios, Canada, and Italy.

Grand Mestre João Grande was born in 1933 in Itagi, Bahia. Grand Mestre Pastinha accepted João as a student at age 20, and made him a master in 1968. After Grand Mestre Pastinha passed in 1981, Grand Mestre João Grande stopped playing Capoeira. Persuaded by Mestre Moraes he returned in the mid-1980's. In 1989 Jelon Vieira invited him to the U.S. and he returned in 1990 to present Capoeira Angola in Atlanta and New York; he has been teaching in New York ever since. He received a Doctorate of Humane Letters from Upsala College in 1995, and the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2001.

Mestre Laércio dos Anjos Borges was born in Salvador, Bahia, in 1966, and started learning Capoeira in 1978. Mestre Laércio is a founding member of the Grupo Filhos de Angola (1984) and the Associação Brasileira de Capoeira Angola (1991). He currently lives and teaches in Berlin and gives workshops throughout Europe. He is keenly dedicated to teaching the art, knowledge, philosophy and awareness of Capoeira Angola in Europe in a dynamic manner.

Mestre Pé de Chumbo, born in 1964 in Floresta Azul, Bahia, began practicing Capoeira at age 10. In 1981, he began training with Grand Mestres João Grande and Grand Mestre João Pequeno, who graduated him as a mestre. Mestre Pé de Chumbo continues to remain close to Grand Mestre João Pequeno (93 yrs old) and is committed to teaching the traditional Capoeira he learned under this great Capoeira Mestre. He has established schools in Brazil, Europe, Mexico, the U.S. and in Germany, where he now resides.

Contra-Mestre Iuri Santos grew up immersed in the rich Afro-Brazilian culture of Salvador, Bahia, where he learned the art of Capoeira Angola. In 1998, he moved to Indiana and founded North Star Capoeira. Iuri teaches Capoeira at Indiana University, IUPUI, in Bloomington and in Indianapolis.

Mestre Amen Santo, born and raised in Salvador, Bahia, is a mestre of Capoeira and master drummer and dance teacher. He began Capoeira with Mestre Waldemar da Paixão and Mestre Avila. In 1989 he founded the Brasil Brasil Cultural Center and the Capoeira Batuque Academy, in Los Angeles. He has been honored in the Martial Arts Hall of Fame, and as a pioneer by the World Sokeship Council.

Mestre Efraim Silva was born in 1964, in Guaruja, São Paulo. He learned Capoeira under Mestres Trindade and Humberto. He moved to the U.S. in 1989 and received a Master of Capoeira certificate from the São Paulo Federation of Capoeira in 1994. He teaches at Yale among other schools and is the Artistic Director of Afro-Brazilian Performing Arts of CT and Ginga Brasileira Dance Company.

About this year’s theme:
Capoeira Angola is everything the mouth eats. Pastinha's words advise the Capoeirista to grow from all that we touch, breath and encounter in this world. In talking with several of you over the past year, we feel a strong solidarity in the vision to raise awareness and consciousness, to build modern quilombos. We are proud that FICA members have a wide wealth of passions pertaining to sustainability, social justice, healing and ancestral guidance. At this year’s conference our intention is to explore how tudo que a boca come can guide us in all aspects of nourishment.

Some topics to ponder are: sustainability, the food revolution/ food justice, organic and urban farming, respectful human resources/labor, Quilombos and Communities, democratic living and sharing for unified success, understanding past and present, connecting with elders, children, and teachers, honoring ancestors, healing, movement and music therapy, nutrition, and traditional medicine.

This is an opportunity to challenge ourselves and each other, to become more aware and to deepen our understanding of all that we are “eating” in our lives.

A panel of black Brazilians leaders and activists discuss the status and struggle of Afro-Brazilians for equality.

They will discuss the work they are doing in Brazil with Afro-Brazilian communities and the resistance of Afro-Brazilians to racism, poverty, police homicides and other issues. The panel also will discuss potential alliances between Afro-Brazilians and African Americans.

The panel will include:
Ms. Luiza Bairros (Salvador da Bahia, Brazil)
A long-standing national leader of the black movement, Ms. Bairros has been active with the Unified Black Movement since the late 1970s eventually becoming the chair. She was also active in organizing black Brazilian participation in the 2001 UN World Conference Against Racism. She is currently the Secretary to Promote Racial and Gender Equality in the State of Bahia.

Dr. Sueli Carneiro (São Paulo, Brazil)
Dr. Carneiro is the director and founder of Geledes (Institute of Black Women), Brazil's leading black women's organization. Geledes has been a leader in fighting for women's rights, human rights, against police brutality and murder, and justice for workers. She also created the Rappers Project, promoting youth activism and leadership development through hip hop.

Elias de Oliveira Sampaio (Salvador, State of Bahia, Brazil)
An economist, Dr. Sampaio is President of the Data Processing Company of the
State of Bahia (PRODEB) and is also a licensed economist of the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management. He has studied and been active around economic issues confronting Afro-Brazilians. He has also been consultant for the Brazilian government's International Development Department Program Against Institutional Racism.

What does a capoeira mestre have to do with Carmen Miranda? Read this passage about Mestre Canjiquinha from the book “Capoiera Angola - Ensaio Sócio Etnografico” by Waldeloir Rego to find out:

Canjiquinha (Washington Bruno da Silva) was born in Salvador on September 25, 1925. He was a student of the famous capoeista Raimundo Aberrê, from Santo Amaro de Purificação.

In regards to his knickname, he explains that is was given to him by his friend named Dálton Barros, in 1938 because of a samba-batuque called Canjiquniha quente, written by Roberto Martins, sung by Carmen Miranda with the band

Conjunto Regional de Benedtio Larcerda, and recorded by Odeon in 1937… and this was the only thing that he knew how to sing, which he would do constantly. And for this his friend took the initiative to give him this knickname.

Canjiquniha is young and agile, he is a talented singer and musician. He sings like few others and with a vast repertoire and even has a great facility for improvising, and of all, it is he who has most contributed to the adaptation of other types of songs into the folklore of capoeira. Many of the songs mentioned in this book were collected from Canjiquinha.

Of all the Bahian capoeiristas, he was the most invited to participate in exhibitions, trips around Brazil, and he even acted in the movies, in both short and feature length films… As a mestre de capoeira, he worked on the feature films: “Os Bandeirantes”, “Barravento”, “O Pagador de Promessas”, “Senhor dos Navegantes”, “Samba”, and many short films.

Careful with the songs that get stuck in your head! You may just end up with a new capoeira knickname.

The Helinä Rautavaara Ethnographic museum in Finland has uploaded a large part of its collection of photographs on Candomblé, Capoeira and Afro-Brazilian culture in general from the 1960s and 1970s on the online portal of the Finnish National Board of Antiquities for public access.

Having received the link to the digital archive through Katri Hirvonen-Nurmi of the Helinä Rautavaara museum, where I used to work as well, I wanted to share it with with you.

The photos digitalized so far consist of black and white photographs taken by Helinä Rautavaara over her trips to Brazil in the 1960s and 1970s.

Primarily taken in Salvador, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in connection to her PhD research on Candomblé, the photo archive contains some real gems. I imagine that as the museum continues with the digitalization of its archives, more materials will be added to the portal.

Dois de Julho: Heroes of Bahian Independence

Dois de Julho (July 2nd) is a big holiday in the city of Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. The center of the city shuts down to make room for a parade celebrating the Caboclo, street parties, and capoeira rodas. On this day in 1823, Brazilian troops definitively expelled Portuguese troops from the country.

The Bahian newspaper, O Correio, published a special edition to celebrate this special day. The edition included a section on the heroes of the battles for independence. Today, streets and neighborhood squares across the city are named after these baianos in honor of their patriotism.

Caboclo
Nobody defeats us: A symbol of the Brazilian people. The caboclo raises the country’s flag and combines all the cultures that make up the nation. He is a mix of the major ethnicities: blacks, whites and Indians, together in a single representation. It was the Caboclo who led and inspired the Bahians in the struggle to liberate their country: tyrants do not have Brazilian hearts!

Maria Felipa
Warrior lioness: Maria Felipa was a capoeirista and led a squadron of forty women on the Island of Itaparica. One of the leading soliders, she set fire to 42 Portuguese ships with her friends. A fearsome woman, she beat captured enemy soldiers. .

Maria Quitéria
A worthy woman: She dressed as a soldier so that she could go into battle. She fought at the Battle of the Parakeets on the Island of Maré, Pituba and Itapuã. In the battle at Pituba, she was one of the best on the battlefield: she attacked trenches and escorted prisoners to the camp.

Antonio Rebouças
Black leader: Antonio Pereira was an abolitionist. A warrior against racism. His favorite saying came to be on battlefield: “anyone brown or black can be a general”. In fact, commanding the battles were many afro-descendents, sertenejos, and even indigenous people.

Encourado de Pedrão
The claws of the sertão: Pedrão is a small city, located near Feira de Santana, that all Brazilians should visit. The warriors dressed in leather came from Pedrão, and are represented in the parade in Salvador every year in this traditional garb.

Corneterio Lopes
Vuvuzela of victory: In the Battle of Pirajá, the Brazilian troops were under pressure. In the kill-or-be-killed battle, the Commander Barros Falção ordered a retreat, but the coronet player Luís Lopes played the signal to advance and kill. It worked: we won!

Other heroes included in the commemoration are Joana Angélica, Lord Cochrane, João de Botas and many more.

Build your Own Archive: The "Velha Guarda" According to Rego

“Capoiera Angola - Ensaio Sócio Etnografico” written by Brazilian ethnologist Waldeloir Rego and published in 1968 is one of the seminal studies regarding the art form and one of the most important documents that exists today about capoeira.

The book is packed with a lot of information about capoeira, including the history of capoeira, the origin of the word and basics about the instruments played, but perhaps most interesting to us capoeiristas is the long compilation of songs and the following discussion about the capoeiristas mentioned in each song, from the chapter “Famous Capoeiras and their Behaviour in the Social Community".

We've already published his writings about Mestre Joao Grande. Here is what Rego had to say about some other capoeiras of the time:

Pedro Mineiro was well-known among the capoeiristas… Also making a name in Bahia were Chico da Barra, Ajé, Chico Cazumbá, Ricardo das Docas, Antônio Maré, Zé Bom Pé, Vitorino Braço Torto, Raimundo Cachoeira, Zacaria Grande, Nôzinho, Bilusca, Piroca Peixoto, Zé do Saco, Samual da Calçada, Sete Mortes, Aberrê, Patu das Pedreiras, Hilário Chapeleiro, Cassiano Balão, Bigode de Sêda, Doze Homens, Tiburcinho de Jaguaripe, Zeca Cidade de Palha, Nô da Emprêsa de Carruagem, Pacífico do Rio Vermelho, Bichiguinha, Chico Me Dá, Edgar Chicharro, Inimigo Sem Tripa, Giote, Neco Canário Pardo, Bôca de Porco, Dendê, Gazolina, Espinho, Dadá e Siri de Mangue.

Pedro Porreta became a synonymous with disorder and bullying. When I was a young boy, I heard many older people speak of this capoeira and when a child was difficult and liked to beat up the other children, they would reprimand him by asking whether he was Pedro Porreta.

Canjiquinha (Wasington Bruno da Silva) told me that Chico Três was an enemy of another capoeirista called Matatu. One day, he set a trap for his enemy. He hid around the corner of Rua do Engenho Velho, right at the entrance for those who were going to Boa Vista mansion, today known as the São João de Deus asylum, and when Matatu approached, distracted, he stabbed him in the chest, put the knife hit his clavicle, breaking it into three pieces. Matuto escaped death and the other became known as Chico Três Pedaços.

Najé was another famous capoeirista from Coqueiro de Paraguaçu, but because he liked to go the city of Najé, this became his knickname. He was also close with people who practiced candomblé, so much so that when they saw him they used to joke, singing:

This song relates to Ogun Já, an aspect of Ogun whose principle characteristic is the sacrifice of dogs, a rare practice, whose processes and songs differ from the rest, although here I do not have the space to go into further detail.

How did the people in your group get their knicknames? Hopefully in a less dramatic and painful way than Chico Três Pedaços.

This book is actually out-of-print and very difficult to find. There are some downloadable versions out there. If you do come across a hardcover copy, protect it with all your pieces, as it is an important part of our heritage.

We'll present more about the "velha guarda" of capoeira from this great book in the future.

ODUNDE, has gained a reputation as one of Philadelphia's brightest cultural jewels. The word ODUNDE originates with the Yoruba people of Nigeria, West Africa. It means "Happy New Year". The ODUNDE festival is an occasion marked by joy and hope, a joy which is highlighted by a colorful procession to the Schuylkill River (at noon) where offerings of fruits and flowers are made to Oshun, the Goddess of the River.

Unlike abolitionist movements in other countries of the Western hemisphere like Haiti and the United States, the Brazilian drive to end slavery was successful without a large, bloody war. In 1888, Princesa Isabel signed into law the Golden Law, and with that, slavery in Brazil officially ended.

But was it really so simple and bloodless?

Unlike other major slaveholding nations of the New World, Brazil was a relatively peaceful, stable and prosperous country, with few major internal disputes that would allow abolitionists a chance to undermine the status quo of slavery.

Andrew George Reid, in his book “Afro-Latin America” shows us that the end of slavery in Brazil was actually a result of prolonged, small struggles over decades and across the country. Abolitionists and slaves worked within the system - suing slaveholders, defending their liberties and demanding equality in the Brazilian court system – as well as against it.

By the time May 13, 1888 rolled around and Princesa Isabel finally picked up her feather pen, slavery “had already collapsed in most of the country” due to the efforts of many brave men and women who hungered for justice.

(It’s a long excerpt, but worth reading!)

Only in Brazil did war not play a major role in slave liberation. The first step in that process was the ending of the African slave trade to Brazil in 1850. The elimination of the slave trade set off a chain of consequences. With no new Africans entering the country, the slave population declined at a rate of 1 to 2 percent per year between 1850 and the late 1880s. Its numbers were still substantial – 1.5 million in the 1872, the year of the first national census – but no longer sufficient to fill the ever-growing demand for workers on the nation’s plantations, farms, and ranches in its towns and cities… this meant the transfer of slaves from urban areas to the plantation zones; and as coffee cultivation in the southeastern provinces continued to expand while sugar production in the northeast stagnated, slaves were also sold southward in a vigorous interprovincial trade.

.. Slaves accustomed to the freer, more open conditions of urban slavery were now forced into the harsh conditions of plantation labor, and slaves who had grown up in the north and northeast were ripped out of familiar surroundings and sold away from their families and friends. Not surprisingly, slaves responded to the violence with violence of their own.

At the same time, slave resistance in the 1860s and 1870s showed clear differences from such resistance earlier in the century. By 1872 the national slave population was over 90 percent Brazilian-born, and even the relatively few Africans had lived in the country for 20 years or more. Those slaves were familiar with Brazilian law, culture, and politics, especially laws and procedures governing slavery. They were more likely to appeal to the law in defense of their rights, and even to obtain freedom. As hundreds were able to do in São Paulo during the 1860s and 1870s when they proved they had been brought to Brazil illegally – in violation of the country’s anti-slaving treaties with Great Britain – from African decades before.

Changes in the law, and Creole slaves’ greater ability to learn about and take advantage of those changes produced some surprising new developments in slave criminality. Earlier in the century, when slaves had attacked masters or overseers, they invariably fled into the forests in an effort to escape. Now, the governor of São Paulo observed in 1878, slaves who had attacked their masters “neither hide nor try to conceal the proofs of their crime – placidly and tranquilly they seek out the authorities and offer themselves up to the vengeance of the law,” convinced, as one such group of slaves argued in an 1861 murder case, “that justice is one our side.”

.. the Brazilian Parliament finally passed its own Free Womb Act in 1871. As elsewhere in Latin America, this law spelled the eventual extinction of slavery. But unlike the rest of Latin America, peace and political stability continued in Brazil, greatly reducing opportunities for slaves to further undermine the institution by fleeing to join rebel armies or guerilla bands. In the absence of such pressures, it was conceivable that Brazilians might continue to hold slaves in significant numbers through the 1920s and 1930s and that slavery might not disappear from the country until the 1950s and 1960s.

Faced with the impossibility of achieving final emancipation through parliamentary means, abolitionists now moved completely outside the political and legal system, engaging in open civil disobedience and defiance of the laws governing slavery. In the northeastern state of Ceará, black portworkers under the leadership of former slaves Francisco do Nascimento and José Napoleão organized work stoppages and refused to load slaves on cargo ships headed for the southeastern coffee zones. In response to their campaign, slavery was abolished in the province in 1884. Meanwhile, radical abolitionists… organized networks of activists and agitators to circulate through the countryside, urging slaves to flee the plantations. Here, finally was the opening that slaves had been waiting for, and they immediately seized on it. By the end of 1887 some 10,000 runaways had made their way from the coffee plantations of São Paulo to the gigantic quilombo Jabaquara, outside of the port city of Santos. Others took refuge in the state capital or in smaller quilombos scattered around the province. During the early months of 1888, mass flights spread to Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and Paraná, and Bahia.

By May 13, 1888, when Parliament approved and Princess Regent Isabel signed the Golden Law finally extinguishing Brazilian slavery, the institution had already collapsed in most of the country. “Slavery ended because the slave didn’t wish to be a slave any longer, because the slave rebelled against his master and the law that enslaved him,” observed the São Paulo newspaper Rebate ten years after the event in 1898. “

The May 13th law was no more than the legal sanctioning, so that public authority wouldn’t be discredited, of an act that had already been consummated by the mass revolt of slaves.”

Just as in Spanish America, slavery was overthrown in large part by the slaves themselves. But while correctly pointing to “the mass revolt of slaves,” Rebate glossed over the fact that such revolts had occurred regularly throughout Brazilian history, and with much greater intensity during the early 1800s, for example than during the 1880s…

A cross-racial, cross-class alliance of this sort, bringing together blacks and whites, free people and slaves could hardly have been predicted from the centuries-long history of Brazilian slavery. Yet it happened.

There you have it. The historical proof of what so many capoeira songs insist: the Golden Law was just a big royal rubber stamp to save face in light of the demise of slavery. Was it just easier to say that slavery ended on May 13th? Did it take up less room in the history books than actually explaining really what happened?

Take it upon yourself to learn everything that your high school textbooks left out when telling the histories of the Americas. You can check out other posts on this date, here and here.

Again, this whole book is worth reading. It gives a concise yet thorough understanding of the history of the African Diaspora in Latin America.

Build Your Own Archive: Afro-Latin America, 1800 - 2000

The book "Afro-Latin America, 1800 -2000" by George Reid Andrews is an excellent overview of the history of the African Diaspora in Latin America, including the Caribbean. While it seems like an impossible task to succinctly cover such an immense subject, the author does a superb job examining and presenting major, overarching historical themes - such as the wars of independence, the institutional policy of “whitening” the population, and the oppression of blacks - and then applying specific examples from the different countries of Latin American and the Caribbean, comparing and contrasting results and consequences.

Brazil, with the largest population of African descendents in the area, gets much attention in the book, and the author talks about capoeira as well as other African traditions, including samba, that came to be defined as essential to the cultures of the countries of Latin America.

Here is a little of what Andrews has to say about capoeira:

This was the martial art of capoeira, a combination of dance and kick-boxing based on Angolan antecedents and developed into a distinctly New World discipline and aesthetic by African slaves. The term and the phenomenon first appeared in Brazilian documents in the 1770s. By the 1790s and early 1800s, capoeiristas were organizing themselves into the maltas, or gangs, that became as much a part of nineteenth-century urban life in Brazil…

… the capoeira gangs were entirely male and based on rigorous codes of secrecy and loyalty to the group. Betrayal of the code meant harsh punishment, up to and including death… capoeira was closely tied to seaports and the sea...

… capoeira gangs in Rio de Janeiro sought to acquire control over the hiring of dockworkers in the port. Frustrated in their effort, they turned to protection rackets and other forms of criminal activity, dividing the city into small fiefdoms and fighting violent turf wars against each other. The gangs somewhat rehabilitated their public image in 1828, when they joined forces with the army to defeat a mutiny by German and Irish mercenaries. During the second half of the century they sought to establish patron-client ties with powerful protectors by hiring themselves out as bodyguards and “enforcers” of important politicians and businessmen. But… the violence of the intergang struggles provoked intensifying police repression and the eventual outlawing in 1890 of “the exercise of agility and corporal dexterity known as capoeira.”

and later in the book:

Brazilian authorities undertook a similar war against capoeira, which was outlawed by federal statute in 1890. In Rio de Janeiro, police arrested more than 600 suspected capoeiristas and sent them to the penal colony on the far offshore island of Fernando de Noronha. Organized capoeira gangs were eliminated from the capital, and from all Brazilian cities except Salvador, where police repression continued through the 1920s and 1930s. According to elderly practitioners of the sport, the police would tie captured capoeiristas to horses and drag them through the streets at full gallop back to police headquarters. As a result, they jokingly recall, they always practiced near police stations so that, if arrested, they would be dragged a shorter distance.

This book is packed with interesting information. We will present more relevant finds in the future.

Remembering M Pastinha on His Birthday

On this day in 1889, Vicente Ferreira de Pastinha was born. He would have been 121 years old today. His spirits lives on in rodas held in his honor around the world today (and truly, every day).

In this wonderful excerpt from the book “Capoiera Angola - Ensaio Sócio Etnografico” written by the anthropologist and folklorist Waldeloir Rego, the author quotes a passage written by Jorge Amado, who talks about his dear friend Mestre Pastinha:

In the lovely and opportune chronicle, “Conversa com Buanga Fêlê, also known as Mário de Andrade, War Lord of Angola”, Jorge Amado returns to talk about Pastinha in this passage:

“I see myself leaning out a window of an old mansion in the Largo do Pelourinho and an older man, older than seventy years, with dimming eyesight, small and agile like a cat, is by my side and talks to me. We are old friends. I don’t even remember anymore when it was that we met and that I began accompanying his glorious trajectory.

This is one the mestres of popular Bahian culture, this black man with a soft voice and a happy face that has aged within his academy of Capoeira de Angola. He dancdes and fights better than any of the youngsters with hard adolescent muscles. I speak of Mestre Pastinha, one of the greatest capoeiristas that Bahia has produced. He is just finishing dancing a samba de Angola and is preparing himself to fight.

- Here – he tells me – I practice the true capoeira de Angola and here men learn to be loyal and just. The law of Angola, that I inherited from my grandparents, is the law of loyalty.

The berimbaus play their ritual music, calling the fighters. Mestre Pastinha fills the room with his presence, his agility, his halluncinating dance. Capoeira de Angola, the Brazilian fight of excellence.”

Pastinha is truly one of the great figures of popular life in Bahia. Of all the capoeiristas, he was the one that traveled the most to do presentations with his school, and he was one of the few to cross the Atlantic to the African continent as part of the delegation invited by the Brazilian Minister of External Relations to present at the Premier Festival International des Arts Nègres, in Dakar, in April of 1966.

Exploring the History of Capoeira

In July 2008, the Brazilian magazine “Revista de História da Biblioteca Nacional” (History Magazine of the National Library) published the article “Berimbau Universal” by Lorenzo Aidé.

The article was published soon after Iphan recognized capoeira as a national patrimony in 2008. It reports that between 2007 and 2008, researchers produced an inventory of texts related to capoeira, including books, movies, and more. They also interviewed seventeen mestres, including Mestres João Pequeno, Russo, Leopoldina, Nestor and others. (Not for nothing, but only seventeen mestres? There are more than seventeen mestres in the city of Salvador alone.)

The article relates a bit of the history that the inventory revealed. And here, we present a little of that:

… The common sense, sacred origin myth associates the practice of capoeira with a rural environment: in the slave quarters, slaves demonstrated their resistance to captivity by training the marital arts inherited from their African ancestors, but they disguijavascript:void(0)sed these arts with dance and music so as not to spark the suspicion of the overseers and plantation owners. There is no documentation that confirms this theory. “There does not exist a single register of capoeira in Palmares, for example. It was more present in the port cities than in the quilombos”, explains Maurício Barros de Castro, Doctor of Social History from USP and assistant coordinator of the study.

Urban and marginal art. The oldest registration of capoeira that is known comes from Rio de Janeiro and dates to 1789. It is a document related to the liberation of a slave named Adão, who had been imprisoned for practicing “capoeiragem”. In the following century, “o capoeira”, in the masculine [the gender of the word], is already a figure recognized in the port cities. In these cities, the streets were areas of intense business, where those known as “escravos de ganho” [non-slaves who rented themselves out for work] dedicated themselves to sporadic work. In this atmosphere, people began to form groups, dispute territories, provoke fights and riots, and get in trouble with the police. The capoeira was the father of the malandro.

It is curious that in Salvador during almost all of the 19th century, the term “capoeira” does not appear. The art form was the same as that in Rio and Recife, but the press and the Salvadoran police used all sorts of synonyms to describe those marginal figures(“valentões”, “bambas”, “navalhistas”) and their crimes (“rabo de arraia”, cabeçada”, “rasteira”, “pontape”). Could it be that the word only came along later? Mauricio Barros de Castro doesn’t risk this conclusion, preferring to highlight another important point of the objective: that of stimulating new research. “Despite the work done by the researchers like Antonio Liberace, Fred Abreu, there is still much to be discovered in relation to 19th century Bahia, unlike Rio de Janeiro, about which we know very much,” he says.

In Recife, the study received much enthusiasm for the same reason – it is another city where there is not much documentation the subject. Known as the land of frevo, the capital city was also the place of much capoeiragem until police persecution reduced the presence of the practice, forcing practitioners to hide it within other popular manifestations. The steps of frevo were inspired by capoeira during Carnaval, pulling the cords with razors clenched in their fists, between twirls and pirouettes.

… It would not be an exaggeration to say that capoeira influenced the formation of our urban popular culture. Capoeiristas made up maltas, and they were also present in Brazil’s most significant conflict – capoeiras enlisted (and were enlisted) heavily in the War of Paraguay (1864-1870). In the political sphere, they created the Guarda Negra (1888), in defense of the monarchy and abolition, and served in three cities as political thugs – protecting both republicans and conservatives. In exchange, the authorities turned a blind eye to their street-fighting games…

Overall, this is an informative article and the inventory is an exciting project that may change the way we think about capoeira, but it raises important concerns about relying heavily on documented materials in re-constructing a history of a phenomenon that has largely been preserved orally.

This problem is further highlighted by the incredible fact that only seventeen mestres were interviewed. Police and war records are given priority over the knowledge of mestres. Surely there is much more important information left to be collected from the many mestres and long-time capoeiristas who were not interviewed.

The “Revista de História da Biblioteca Nacional” is an excellent magazine, and each month it almost always includes an article pertaining to capoeira or some similar subject. And of course, it includes many other interesting historical topics including an article on the King of Belguim’s 1920 visit, when he scandalized Rio de Janeiro’s high society and drew crowds of carioca spectators as he took his morning bath at Copabana beach. O la la!

L’association vous prépare un week-end animé le 19, 20 et 21 mars 2010 à la manière des Petits Débrouillards.

Des ateliers autour de la capoeira angola, et de la musique seront mis en place, où chacun sera invité à venir participer et découvrir notre association. L’ambiance sera assurée par tous les bénévoles et membres de l’association, ainsi que par les capoeristas de Paris qui viendra animer et jouer ses notes dan la roda. Des échanges pourront se faire entre le public, et les intervenants extérieurs...

S’en suivra un rada de capoeira angola, réunira tous les adhérents de l’association. Les animations (capoeira) restent encore secrètes pour le moment... Sachez simplement que vous serez surpris!

Les ateliers de percussions afro-brésiliennes sont dirigés par Mestre Pessoa (Olinda-PE) musicien professionnel spécialiste des musiques afro-brésiliennes et fundador du afoxé Alafin Oyó.

Les ateliers de danse sont dirigés par Priscilla Borel (Recife-PE) une danseuse, chanteuse et aussi percussionista professionnelle. Accès aux danses populaires du Carnaval afro-brésilien (maracatu,afoxé et frevo).

our intention in creating this event was to provide a forum for the youths of our communities to find and develop resources through which to focus their tremendous energies in positive ways.

space is limited, we will only be receiving 50 students in total so please register your kids early. the idea is "each one, teach one." hoping that our young ones, as ambassadors, will go back to their own groups with new knowledge and share it, inspiring their groups at home.

along with this, we very intentionally kept the cost to participants extremely low. the idea being that we hold something where parents weren't barred from sending there young ones based on financial barriers. as well, the event being one where the group chaperones would be active guides and facilitators during all of the programs.

i hope you all will feel free to give puck or myself a call if you have any questions, suggestions, requests or have any help to provide. in the meantime, gather your youths and look for registration forms coming to your group very soon

Celebrating Iemanjá in Rio Vermelho

On Tuesday, February 2, the neighborhood of Rio Vermelho in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil celebrated the Queen of the Sea, Iemanjá. Devotees began arriving at the beach around 4:00 am and kept streaming into the Casa de Peso, where the offerings were collected until well into the evening; bringing offerings of flowers, perfume, jewelry, mirrors, and dolls to be sent off into the sea.

And there was plenty of capoeira. A street roda led by Sapoti, who organizes the weekly Sunday night roda in Rio Vermelho, as well as a roda, samba, and feijoada organized by Grupo Nzinga.
